Difficult prefixes

Negative Prefixes for verbs

Итак, друзья, представляем вам список глаголов, которые с отрицательными приставками образуют совсем иное, противоположное значение.

Приставка Un-. Довольно редко употребляется вместе с глаголами и имеет значение «удалить»:

  • Unschedule – удалить из расписания
  • Unfriend – удалить из друзей

Например:

  • I don’t understand why Mike unfriended me from his list of friends on Facebook. – Я не понимаю, почему Майк удалил меня из своего списка друзей на фейсбуке.
  • We learned that Maths is unscheduled. —

Приставка De-. Это отрицательная приставка, которая частенько остается и в русском языке (де-) либо переводится как «раз-»:

  • Decontaminate — дезинфицировать
  • Decrease — уменьшать
  • Deform — деформировать
  • Derail – сходить с рельсов
  • Deactivate — деактивировать
  • Decode — декодировать
  • Decommiss — списывать
  • Decompose — разбирать
  • Deconstruct –разбирать

Примеры предложений:

  • Tom deactivated all the programs on his computer. – Том деактивировал все программы на своем компьютере.

Приставка Dis-. Эта отрицательная приставка часто переводится как «не» или «дез»:

  • Disintegrate – дезинтегрировать
  • Displease  — не нравиться
  • Distrust – не доверять
  • Disagree – не соглашаться
  • Disfigure – обезображивать
  • Disinfect – дезинфицировать
  • Disinherit – лишать наследства
  • Dislike – не нравиться

К примеру:

  • What kind of painter is he? He disfigured all the pictures! – Что он за художник? Он обезобразил все картины!

Приставка Mis-. Эта отрицательная приставка имеет значение «неправильно»:

  • Mislead — вводить в заблуждение
  • Misplace — поставить не на то место
  • Misspell — делать орфографические ошибки
  • Mistake – ошибаться

Обратите внимание:

  • Ann misunderstood me and got angry with me. – Анна неправильно меня поняла и рассердилась на меня.
  • His affirmation misled all the members of the club. – Его утверждение ввело в заблуждение всех членов клуба.
  • To mistake is human. – Человеку свойственно ошибаться.
  • The citizens were misinformed about the president’s arrival. – Граждане были неправильно информированы о прибытии президента.
  • He misunderstood my sentence and misinterpreted it. – Он неправильно понял мое высказывание и неверно истолковал его.

Друзья, заметьте, что эти приставки примыкают к некоторым неправильным глаголам. Следовательно, спрягать их нужно в соответствии с их формами. К примеру:

  • Misunderstand (происходит от understand) – misunderstood – misunderstood
  • Mistake (происходит от take) – mistook — mistaken

Еще одна важная деталь: особого принципа или правила, по которым отрицательные приставки привязываются к глаголам, нет. Поэтому желательно все эти глаголы запомнить. Желаем вам удачи!

Negative Prefixes : un-, in-, im-, il-, dis-

Negative Prefixes : un-, in-, im-, il-, dis-

what is the difference please between flammable and inflammable?

There is no difference in meaning and little or no difference in use.

Chemicals, gases or cloth materials that are flammableinflammable catch fire and burn easily. Perhaps, in usage, cloth materials are usually described as inflammable. So we might say: ‘The material from which these car seats are made is highly inflammable. And conversely, certain gases or chemicals may be thought of as flammable. So we might say: ‘Aircraft fuel is highly flammable‘. But there are no hard and fast patterns.

All this is somewhat strange, because usually when we add a prefix such as in- or un- or dis- to the beginning of adjectives, adverbs and verbs, we give them the opposite meaning.

Try this activity. Draw half a dozen columns on a large piece of paper and insert a prefix heading in each column. Perhaps leave one or two columns empty for new prefix headings as they occur to you. Your piece of paper should look something like this:

un-
im-
in-
il-
dis-
ir-

Then, over a period of time, write in as many adjectives with a negative meaning using these prefixes that you can think of.

To help you get started, you might like to test your knowledge against these opposites. Print out this exercise, fill in the missing words and then check your answers against the answer key.

The first one is done for you.

ability – disability

advantage – disadvantage

agree – disagree

appear – disappear

This mistake is probably caused by Russian spelling of such words. Compare these examples:

deactivate

deodorant

disavow

disinfection

disintegration

disorganize

disorient / disorientate

disinformation / misinformation

Ooh! A pithy phrase, indeed! “Trustworthy dictionary.”

    What makes a dictionary trustworthy?

  • Maeveon November 29, 2008 5:00 pm

    Brad K.,
I admit it. I was being deliberately slippery. You might want to look at this post:

Is there any difference between un- and Non perfixes

  • Kitty Wheaton December 03, 2010 9:50 pm

    Naim,

Although both “un” and “non” mean “not,” they are not interchangeable. For example, in such words as “nonsense,” non-fiction,” “non-alcoholic,” “non-profit,” “non-descript,” “non-compliance,” etc., we cannot change “non” to “un.” By the same token, we cannot change “un” to “non” in such words as those listed below:
“unconstitutional,” unkind,” “unkempt,” “unknown,” etc. Do you see what I mean?

  • Azimahon June 29, 2011 1:57 pm

what ‘such’ means?give me some example how to use this word..i am confuse to use it..and what difference between it is, is it,its and it’s?please help me

  • Steveon August 23, 2011 3:45 pm

Ok.. I have a question concerning the difference between “un” and “non.” We have Stabilized platforms that require a mechanical means to provide the stabilization. We also have platforms that have no stabilization, but may actually have it in the future.

To the best of my understanding, those platforms should be “unstabilized,” as they have the ability to be stabilized later. Much like “unhappy,” where I can be happy later – but nonhappy doesn’t really work well as it indicates perpetual misery.

So, should it be “unstabilized” or “nonstabilized?”

Any help with the office argument of the day would be greatly appreciated!

  • Maeveon August 25, 2011 2:39 pm

    Steve,
For the platforms lacking stabilization, the term called for is “nonstabilized.”

The prefix “un-” is really two prefixes. One is added to verbs to indicate reversal; the other is added to adjectives to indicate the opposite of the positive form of the adjective.

The addition of non- has the sense of “absence or lack of.” It does not matter whether or not the platform may be stabilized in future. You want to describe a platform that does not have the stabilization now. It is “nonstabilized.” It lacks stabilization.

    More about “un-” and “non-“:

Hi, there. Would you pls help me with the question: what’s the difference between the prifixes “in–” and “un–” and how I could judge which one to use when to add one of the prefixes to an adjective and give the negative meaning?

Порядок слов в английском вопросе к подлежащему (subject question)

Это особый случай, когда мы не добавляем вспомогательные глаголы do, does, did.
Разберем для примера следующее предложение:

Somebody paid the bill.
(Кто-то оплатил счет)

Можно задать вопрос к дополнению the bill
What did somebody pay?
(Что оплатил кто-то?), тут необходимо добавить вспомогательный глагол.

Если же мы хотим узнать, кто оплатил счет, то это будет вопрос к подлежащему, и он будет формироваться следующим образом: Who paid the bill?
(Кто оплатил счет?) — без вспомогательного глагола.

Примеры вопросов к подлежащему:

What happened?
(Что случилось?)Who lives in the flat?
(Кто живет в квартире?)What fell on the floor?
(Что упало на пол?)Who cooked that cake?
(Кто приготовил тот торт?)

Префиксы UN и IN

Productive and non-productive affixes

The
word-forming activity of affixes may change in the course of time.
This raises the question of productivity
of
derivational affixes, i.e. the ability of being used to form new,
occasional or potential words, which can be readily understood by the
language-speakers. Thus, productive
affixes
are
those used to form new words in the period in question.

The
most productive prefixes in Modern English are: de-
(decontaminate), re- (rethink), pre- (prefabricate),
поп
(non-operational), un- (unfunny), anti- (antibiotic).

The
most productive English suffixes are given below:

Noun-forming
suffixes

-er
(manager),
-ing
(fighting),
-ness
(sweetness),

-ation
(automation),
ее(evacuee),
-ism
(materialism),

-ist
(impressionist),
-ance/-ancy
(redundancy),
-ry
(gimmickry),

-or
(reactor),
-ics
(cybernetics)

Adjective-forming
suffixes

-able
(tolerable),
-ic
(electronic),
-ish
(smartish),
-ed
(learned),
-less
(jobless),
-y
(tweedy)

Verb-forming
suffixes

-ize/-ise
(vitaminize),
-ate
(oxidate),
-ify
(falsify)

Adverb-forming
suffixes

-ly
(equally)

Non-productive
affixes
are
the affixes which are not able to form new words in the period in
question. Non-productive affixes are recognized as separate morphemes
and possess clear-cut semantic characteristics. In some cases,
however, the lexical meaning of a nonproductive affix fades off
so that only its part-of-speech meaning remains, e.g. the
adjective-forming suffix some
(lonesome, loathsome).

Some
non-productive English suffixes are given below:

Noun-forming
suffixes -th
(truth),
-hood
(sisterhood),
-ship
(scholarship)

Adjective-forming
-ful
(peaceful),
-ly
(sickly),
-some
(tiresome),

suffixes
-en
(golden),
-ous
(courageous)

Verb-forming
suffixes -en
(strengthen)

It
is worthy of note that an affix may lose its productivity and then
become productive again in the process of word-formation. This
happened to the suffix -dom.For
a long period of time it was nonproductive but in the last
hundred years -domgot
a new lease of life so that a great amount of words was coined with
its help, e.g. serfdom,
slavedom.

The
productivity of an affix should not be confused with its frequency
of occurrence.
The
frequency of occurrence is understood as the existence in the
vocabulary of a great number of words containing the affix in
question. An affix may occur in hundreds of words, but if it is not
used to form new words, it is not productive. For example, the
adjective suffix -fulis
met in hundreds of adjectives (beautiful,
hopeful, trustful, useful),
but
no new words seem to be built with its help, and so it is
non-productive.
